Originally from North Dakota, Inspīr resident Peggy O’Brien led an accomplished career in accounting before pivoting into real estate, where she found great purpose helping clients secure their dream homes. Now retired, she often finds herself reminiscing less about her career and more about the spirited sense of togetherness she felt growing up in her tight-knit community. Some of Peggy’s most treasured memories were shaped during summers at camp, where adventure and camaraderie left an indelible impact. Now at Inspīr Carnegie Hill, that same sense of adventure and intellectual curiosity still drives Peggy’s lifestyle.
We recently sat down with Peggy to hear her perspective on life at Inspīr:
Q: What inspired you to move to Inspīr Carnegie Hill?
A: The decision to move to "Inspīr" was shaped by multiple factors - health complications nudged me towards a supportive environment, and the community's prime location along with its proximity to family members felt like a comforting embrace. It was my daughter, a Manhattan resident of three decades, who introduced me to the idea of Inspīr.
Q: What considerations did you have in mind when looking for a community?
A: As I entered the next chapter of my life, I wanted to maintain an active, culturally-enriched lifestyle but also wanted to have the safety and security of a community and be closer to my daughter. I appreciated that Inspīr offers discreet assistance and peace of mind without impacting one’s dignity or independence. The staff truly understand and accommodate residents’ needs. This was something I thought was important when anticipating my future needs.
I also wanted to find social connection and fulfill my sense of adventure. Inspir’s diverse experiences and proximity to NYC’s cultural attractions provided the perfect environment to pursue my passions. The robust calendar of “On the Town” excursions perfectly complement the in-house programming, allowing me to explore New York’s art, dining and entertainment scenes while building community with neighbors.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: I take full advantage of all Inspīr has to offer! No two days are the same for me. Some days I enjoy breakfast and then head out for some adventure, perhaps taking in a matinee Broadway performance, and don’t return until late afternoon. Other days, I enjoy some quiet relaxation before grabbing lunch with friends at Inspir’s Onyx bistro followed by a visit to the in-house salon, a lecture on a topic like 20th century art, or a game of canasta with friends. I also welcome opportunities to volunteer with the Community Fridge to give back.
Q: What Inspīr offerings do you enjoy most?
A: While I cherish the treasured outings that the city offers, my heart finds special warmth in the in-house offerings. I love the Broadway Series, especially interacting with talents from iconic shows! The lectures let me explore novel topics – a highlight was hearing from the Hamilton producer. I’m also nurturing my creative side through hands-on workshops like floral design.
Q: How does Inspir’s programming impact your lifestyle?
A: Inspīr gives me tremendous resources and opportunities to remain actively engaged with the world around me. My life feels just as dynamic and multidimensional as ever before!

A: Inspīr allows me to maintain my vibrant lifestyle while offering support when I need it. I enjoy stimulating conversations and activities with likeminded residents. I’m grateful to again be part of a thoughtful, caring community.
